What is Microsoft Dynamics NAV?

Microsoft Dynamics NAV was one of the most popular ERP solutions in the world. In 2018, it was renamed to Dynamics 365 Business Central, which still exists today. Even though the ERP system is no longer called that, the name “Dynamics NAV” is also still very common.

Since 2018, the ERP product line has been continued under the name Dynamics 365 Business Central – instead of Microsoft Dynamics NAV including the year.

This name change is primarily due to Microsoft’s focus on the cloud. But we can give the all-clear: It is “cloud first, but not cloud only”. The solution will continue to be available as a purchased license within the company (on-premises).

Even though the ERP solution Microsoft Dynamics NAV has been replaced by the solution Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, we still support our existing customers in older versions.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is the successor of the ERP solution Navision. After the system was initially known as Navision, Microsoft renamed it Microsoft Dynamics NAV. However, then another renaming took place in 2018, which became known as Dynamics 365 Business Central on the market and still exists today.

The name changes go hand in hand with Microsoft’s optimizations and expansion of its offering.

There are different methods of upgrading from Dynamics NAV to Dynamics 365 Business Central. Generally, the waterfall model or an agile approach is distinguished. We have developed our own agile methodology: First, we do the rough planning (all required functionalities, project start, framework) within 3-4 days.

After that we get down to the implementation in 4-week iterative phases or sprints. For each phase we plan the sprint, conceptualize the tasks and the budget and implement them after your approval. At the end, the customer must test the implementations of a phase and assess the quality. After that the next implementation phase will start. Tasks that have not been completed are transferred to the next implementation phase. This procedure is repeated in each of the implementation phases.

At the end, the implementations are compiled. We then train your team and have them test the system extensively before going live with it.

The way and duration of setting up Dynamics NAV (since 2018 Dynamics 365 Business Central) varies from company to company. Different factors (e.g. deployment option, size, proportion of individual requirements) play a role here.

Deploying the online solution takes only a few minutes. The time it takes to set up your on-premises solution is longer due to the setup of the on-premises (local) components alone, as the necessary server systems (database, application, etc.) have to be provided. In addition, the following points are relevant:

– If applicable, support during the introduction of the system (very individual)
– If necessary, setup of the Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) environment: new user accounts or takeover/synchronization of the local Active Directory accounts for easier administration (very individual)
– If necessary, takeover of extensions (very individual)
